What Is a Transfer Switch?

A Transfer Switch is an electrical switching device that connects selected building circuits to an alternate power source, such as a portable generator. The device directs those circuits to one source at a time and separates the alternate source from utility power. This arrangement supports controlled backup power for chosen loads during an outage. Key Takeaways About Transfer Switch

  • A transfer switch serves selected circuits, not automatically every circuit.
  • The switch changes the active power source through a controlled connection.
  • A transfer switch is not the same as a generator inlet.

How Transfer Switch Works

A Transfer Switch routes electricity from the normal utility source or an alternate generator source to selected circuits. The switch changes the connection so the chosen circuits receive power from one source at a time. Its practical role is to organize generator power at the electrical panel.

A portable generator installation often pairs the switch with a generator inlet and a circuit directory. The inlet provides the connection point for the generator cord. The directory identifies the circuits controlled by the switch, which may include selected lighting, refrigeration, or heating equipment. Circuit selection depends on the generator capacity and the building's electrical layout.

From the Service Electric team

When we install a transfer switch, we identify the circuits the portable generator can support and trace those circuits through the panel. We check conductor terminations, grounding and neutral arrangements, enclosure placement, and switch operation. Our team also labels the selected circuits so the transfer process is clear during an outage.

Transfer Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants portable generator power for selected lights, a refrigerator, and a heating system. A transfer switch connects those circuits to the generator inlet and keeps the remaining circuits on the normal panel supply.
