What Is a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle?

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle is an electrical outlet with internal shutters that block access to the energized contact openings. The shutters open when matching pressure is applied to both openings at once. This design helps prevent objects from entering one opening and reaching live electrical parts, while preserving normal plug use.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Receptacle

  • Internal shutters cover the contact openings.
  • A matching plug opens both shutters together.
  • Tamper-resistant does not mean GFCI-protected.

How Tamper-Resistant Receptacle Works

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle contains spring-loaded shutters behind its contact openings. The shutters stay closed when pressure reaches only one opening. A standard plug applies matching pressure to both openings, so the shutters move aside and allow the plug blades to connect with the receptacle contacts.

The shutter mechanism works as a physical barrier, while the receptacle still operates like a normal outlet during proper plug insertion. Tamper-resistant construction does not detect leakage current or interrupt a circuit. A GFCI receptacle provides that separate function by monitoring current balance and disconnecting power when a fault condition occurs. A tamper-resistant receptacle may be installed as part of an outlet replacement or new wiring project when protected access to the contacts is useful.

From the Service Electric team

When we handle GFCI Outlet Installation, we check whether the receptacle type fits the location and the existing wiring. We also verify that the plug fits fully and that the receptacle provides the intended GFCI function. Our team treats tamper resistance and ground-fault protection as separate features.

Tamper-Resistant Receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner in Victoria, Texas may request a GFCI outlet in a bathroom with tamper-resistant construction. The replacement can provide ground-fault protection while its shutters restrict access to the energized contact openings.
