What Is A Surge Protector?

A surge protector is an electrical device that limits a sudden rise in voltage and redirects excess energy away from connected equipment. A surge protector may serve one receptacle or an entire electrical system. Whole-home models connect at the service equipment and help reduce damage from surges entering through utility lines or other connected wiring.

Key Takeaways About Surge Protector

  • It responds to sudden voltage increases.
  • Whole-home models protect circuits at the electrical panel.
  • A surge protector is not the same as a circuit breaker.

How Surge Protector Works

A surge protector monitors the voltage supplied to connected circuits. When voltage rises sharply, internal components such as metal oxide varistors create a lower-resistance path for excess energy. The device directs that energy toward the grounding system, which reduces the voltage reaching equipment.

A whole-home surge protector connects near the service equipment, so protection begins before power travels through branch circuits. A plug-in protector works at one outlet and protects equipment connected through that device. Neither type controls normal overloads, clears short circuits, or replaces a circuit breaker. A protector may also show a status indicator that helps identify whether its protective parts remain active.

From the Service Electric team

When we install or inspect whole-home surge protection, we check the service equipment, grounding connections, and available mounting space. We also review the protected circuits and confirm that the device fits the electrical system. Our team looks for damaged wiring or warning indicators that could affect performance.
